Winter Update / February 2024

Dear HFJ Community,

We are excited to share a recent milestone in our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking and support survivors. On January 13, 2024, Dr. Walls had the privilege of participating in the STOP event, hosted by Soroptimist of Ventura County, in downtown Ventura, CA. This event served as a powerful platform to shine a light on the realities of human trafficking and mobilize the community to take action.

One of the most inspiring moments of the event was hearing the courageous story of Sandy Esparza, a survivor of human trafficking who has transformed her trauma into advocacy. Sandy now serves as Zoe International's Human Trafficking Prevention Program Manager and Lived Experience Expert. Her journey from victim to advocate is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Sandy's work focuses on educating the community about human trafficking and providing vital victim advocacy support during law enforcement operations and throughout the year. Her dedication to empowering survivors and raising awareness is both admirable and impactful.

Dr. Walls' participation in the event underscores HFJ's commitment to supporting survivors and combating human trafficking. By amplifying voices like Sandy's and collaborating with organizations like Soroptimist of Ventura County, we can foster greater awareness, empathy, and action within our communities.

A Deeper Dive

Zoe International is a non-profit organization dedicated to combating human trafficking and providing support to survivors. Specifically it does this by:

Prevention: Zoe International focuses on preventing human trafficking through education and awareness-raising initiatives. They work to educate communities about the signs of trafficking, how to stay safe, and how to prevent exploitation.
Intervention: The organization provides intervention services to rescue individuals who are currently being trafficked or at risk of trafficking. This may involve working with law enforcement agencies and other partners to conduct rescue operations and provide immediate assistance to victims.
Aftercare: Zoe International offers comprehensive aftercare services to survivors of human trafficking. This includes providing shelter, medical care, counseling, vocational training, and other forms of support to help survivors rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.
Advocacy: The organization advocates for stronger laws and policies to combat human trafficking and protect survivors. They also work to raise awareness about the issue and mobilize communities to take action against trafficking.
