Fall Update / October 2022

I sometimes think about life and liken it to the animal kingdom. Some people and groups of people on this earth for various reasons have amassed wealth and power - they can be likened to the lions and the orcas able to do what they want when they want, for the most part. There are other people and groups of people that can be likened to the elephants and the blue whales of the world. They are huge, powerful, beautiful, and many times totally unaware of the space and needs of others. The vast majority of us are the small creatures like blue birds, mice, and the bristlemouth fish. Individually our stories are but a drop in the bucket and most of what we do on this earth is forgotten with time; and yet we are all vital for the health of the ecosystem as a whole.

While history doesn't exactly repeat itself, it definitely seems to rhyme. Through the ages individuals' power or systems' power have been used justly and unjustly. What do we, the mice of the world, do when we witness injustice? The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."

TALKING TO OUR YOUNG ONES ABOUT JUSTICE

Desmond Gets Free written by Matt Meyer is an inspiring story about a little mouse named Desmond who lives in a beautiful meadow. In the middle of the night he wakes to find that he is stuck, as an elephant has laid down and fallen asleep on his tail. Unable to wake the elephant himself he implores various animals to help him as they pass, but one by one they inform him that they don’t dare get involved in other animals' business. Finally another mouse, Nelson, comes by and is more than willing to help! When Nelson discovers he cannot wake the elephant alone, he recruits several other mice and together they find a way to convince the elephant to roll over so that Desmond can go free. This simple and powerful story illustrates a wonderful lesson for children (and reminder for us adults) of the importance of using our voices and working together for the sake of justice and equity for each of us.
